Accessing Shared Card Details
You've received a secure link to view virtual card details. This guide will walk you through accessing and using these details to process a payment.
What is a secure card link?
A secure card link is a web address that lets you view virtual card details without including them in an email. This protects sensitive information while making it easy to access the information needed to take a payment.
The link is unique to you and can only be used a limited number of times before it expires.
Receiving the link
You might receive the link in one of two ways:
1. Via a Modulr email
You’ll receive an email from Modulr that includes:
- The name of the company sharing the card details
- How many times you can reveal the card details
- When the link expires
- A message from the sender (if they’ve included one)
- Additional booking information, such as references, guest names, or payment amounts (if provided by the sender)
2. In a custom email or message
Alternatively, your client may send you their own email or message containing the card link. The details included will depend on what your client chooses to share and may differ from a Modulr-generated email.
Opening the link
Click the link in your email to open it in your web browser. If you have received a Modulr-generated email, click the View Card Details button.
You can open the link as many times as needed, but you can reveal the actual card details only a limited number of times (your client sets this limit).
What you'll see
When you open the link, you'll see:
- The name of the company that shared the card
- A message from the sender (if they included one)
- When the link expires
- How many times you can reveal the card details
- When the card details were last revealed (after the first time)
Revealing the card details
When you're ready to process the payment:
- Click the Reveal button
- The sensitive card information will appear:
- Card number (also called PAN)
- Expiry date
- CVV (the 3-digit security code). You‘ll have to enable the CVV toggle to see this.
- Any supporting information your client added, such as booking references, guest names, or payment amounts.
Note: Once you click Reveal, it counts as one use of your reveal limit. Make sure you're ready to capture the details before revealing them.
Understanding the card information
Along with the card number, expiry date, and CVV, you may see additional information that helps you process the payment correctly:
Card limit and currency
This shows the maximum amount that can be charged to the card and which currency it's in. Make sure the payment you process doesn't exceed this amount.
Authorisation window
This is the date range during which the card can be used. You can only charge the card within this period. If you try to process a payment outside this window, the transaction will be declined.
If you need to confirm the card is valid, you can perform a 0-value authorisation before the Auth Window starts.
Card cancellation date
This is when the card will stop working entirely. It may be the same as or different from the link expiry date.
Booking reference and guest name
If the sender included these details, they'll help you match the card to the correct reservation in your system. This is helpful if you're managing multiple bookings from the same client.
Note: Your client controls which of these details are shared with you. Depending on what they chose when creating the link, you may see all, some, or none of them.
Copying the card information
Each piece of card information has a copy icon (📋) next to it:
- Card number: Click the copy icon next to the card number, then paste it into your property management system or checkout form
- Expiry date: Click the copy icon next to the expiry date, then paste it into your system
- CVV: Click the toggle to reveal the CVV, then click the copy icon to copy it and paste it into your system
Tip: Copy and paste each piece of information carefully to avoid errors. Double-check that all details were entered correctly before submitting the payment.
Understanding reveal limits
The person sharing the card sets a reveal limit – the number of times you can view the sensitive card details.
- You can open the link as many times as you want
- But you can only click Reveal the number of times specified in the limit
- Once you've used all your reveals, you'll need to contact the sender for a new link
Example: If your reveal limit is 2, you can click Reveal twice. After that, the card details will no longer be accessible through this link.
When the link expires
The link will stop working after the expiry date shown on the screen. If you need access after the link expires, contact the company that sent it.
